Giants in the field HOLYOKE - Joel Southern, who will go down in history as the first coach of
the Holyoke Giants, plays his cards close to the vest. And when he's not playing cards, he's merely non-committal. Southern returned Thursday from a few days visiting family, a well-earned rest after helping guide the Western New England College baseball team to its best season ever. Monday, the WNEC assistant will greet the Giants for the first of a couple of practice sessions that will precede a Wednesday open-to-the-public scrimmage. Two days later, the Giants begin their grueling 43-game in 51 day New England Collegiate Baseball League schedule. The Giants open Friday at 7 p.m. at MacKenzie Field against the Vermont Mountaineers. The only thing is, Major League Baseball is holding its annual June Draft at the same time Southern and his charges will be gathering at MacKenzie for their initial workouts. So, the coach is not exactly positive just who he'll be greeting. And Southern is not a speculative kind of guy. "It's hard to say (who he thinks could be drafted)," Southern said.
