Inside Corner: The Latest Around College Baseball

03/13/2020 12:07 PM

With the coronavirus outbreak headlining the news this week, the college baseball world has come to a halt as many spring seasons across all levels have been postponed or completely canceled.

It remains to be seen how much college baseball ― if any ― will be played over the course of the next weeks and months before our summer season at Fraser Field begins on May 27, but we still have some player highlights from the past week in this edition of “Inside Corner.” In the next installment we'll honor the former Navigators around the country who are now seniors.

One of the most impactful Navs this week was Northeastern outfielder Ryan Cervone who has hit safely in six consecutive appearances, recorded one RBI in the last four games and started the last three. The Lexington, Mass., native hit a run-scoring double during Wednesday’s win over Hartford after posting his first two-hit game as a collegiate player last Saturday at FAU.

The third multi-hit game of James McCallum’s season at Saint Leo came Saturday against Alderson Broaddus as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. McCallum is one of four Lions with double-digit RBI and ranks in a tie for second on the team with four home runs on the season.

Also in the Division 2 ranks, Flagler’s Jett Walsh pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball with two strikeouts during a Tuesday win over Assumption. He has not allowed a hit or a run in three of his last four outings.

Stonehill’s Colin Jaena earned his second straight win last Saturday against Caldwell as he struck out five on the way to a seven-inning complete game. Luke Marshall had a strong start against American International a day earlier, striking out a career-high seven batters and allowing just two earned runs over six innings.

Jack Wallace earned the win in Franklin Pierce's most recent action, pitching 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings out of the bullpen last Tuesday against Saint Thomas Aquinas. At Fisher, Will Carpenter finished the season with a 5-1 record as he struck out 15 and allowed just two runs over his last two appearances (10 innings) against West Virginia Tech and Rio Grande.

Back in Division 1, Drew Bristow drove in his first collegiate run and scored another as UNC Asheville completed a three-game sweep of Coppin State last weekend. Bristow started the last two games of the series and reached base in both.

Jon Gilbride started three games during UMass Lowell’s continuing spring break trip this week, recording his second collegiate RBI last Saturday at LSU before doubling and coming across the plate on Tuesday at Virginia. Joe Gunn went 1-for-3 with a double and a stolen base during Penn State’s Sunday win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Jake Rainess hit safely in two of Maine’s three games at Missouri State last weekend and scored the deciding goal during Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Bears. For UMass, Jack Whorf reached base for the third time in his five collegiate games at Georgia.
