Frelick Named FCBL's Top Prospect

LYNN, Mass. -- After putting together one of the finest offensive seasons in North Shore Navigators history, shortstop Sal Frelick was named the Futures Collegiate Baseball League’s Top Pro Prospect for 2018. The award was presented prior to Sunday’s season finale against the Nashua Silver Knights at Fraser Field.

A rising Boston College freshman, Frelick made an instant impact on manager Todd Alford’s lineup after leading his Lexington High School team to its first-ever Massachusetts Super 8 tournament berth during the spring. He becomes the first FCBL Top Pro Prospect in franchise history and joins Dartmouth’s Austen Michel – who was named Pitcher of the Year in 2017 – as Navs to earn a major FCBL honor over the last two summers.

“Thank you to the Futures League, and especially Todd Alford and the Navigators, for giving me the opportunity to play and make lifelong memories this summer,” Frelick said. “Todd is everything you want in a coach. He is someone who treats every game like it’s the World Series but also lets kids go and craft their own game. And it’s not just on the field. Off the field, he builds great relationships with his players.”

Frelick finished his 35 games this summer with a .361 average, which ranks second to current Seattle Mariners farmhand Dario Pizzano in Navs history as well as second among FCBL qualifiers through Saturday’s action.

Entering the final day of the regular season, Frelick ranked in the top five in the other Triple Crown categories, tying for the FCBL lead with seven home runs and for fourth in the RBI race with 36. He leads the league with a .594 slugging percentage in addition to sitting among the leaders in other categories, including stolen bases (22, 3rd) and total bases (79, 4th).

Though Frelick was the leadoff hitter in 20 of his games for the Navs, he quickly turned into the ultimate power threat. He remarkably hit all of his home runs before any other member of the team recorded one, beginning with a June 12 grand slam that left right field at Pittsfield’s Wahconah Park just two pitches into his summer. Frelick would hit safely in each of his first 11 games and reached base in 20 straight.

Frelick was a versatile member of the lineup as well, as he played 10 games in center field, one in left field, five at second base, three at third base, and one as the designated hitter in addition to his 14 starts at his primary shortstop position.

“It’s an absolute honor to receive this award,” said Frelick. “I wasn’t sure how I would fare in this league coming right out of high school, but all my teammates and coaches helped make the adjustment much easier by guiding me the right way. This award goes to all of them as well.”

Frelick joined the Navs after completing a standout, three-sport high school career in Lexington. In addition to his baseball exploits, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Frelick earned Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year honors in football after totaling 52 touchdowns and more than 3,700 yards of total offense in the fall. He also captained the Minutemen hockey team.
