HOLYOKE - There will be peanuts, hot dogs and Cracker Jack for refreshment Saturday, 5-8 p.m., as the Canal Gallery opens "The Art of Baseball," an exhibit on the sport featuring paintings, sculpture, photos and educational materials. The gallery, located at 380 Dwight St., is open Thursdays and Saturdays, noon-5 p.m. and by appointment. The baseball exhibit runs through Sept. 7.

Nona Hatay, curator, said the exhibit features vintage photos from area sources and contemporary photos from local photographers such as David Roback, John Suchocki and James T. Sears.

Works by artists Don Wilhelm, Frank Cressotti, Roger Patrick and Greg Stone will also be on display.

There will also be photos and memorabilia loaned to the exhibit by the Holyoke Sports Legacy Committee. Those materials include old uniforms, baseballs, gloves and other mementos.

Patrick J. Moynihan, a member of the Legacy Committee and a member of the marketing department for the Holyoke Giants in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, said the Legacy group and the Giants have contributed to the exhibit.

"We think people who visit the exhibit will find it interesting not only from a baseball perspective but also from a historical one," he said.

Hatay said the exhibit will entertain ideas and contributions from the community as the exhibit continues.

"Holyoke is a such a great baseball center. We are more than willing to look at memorabilia that we could possibly add to the event," she said.

Moynihan added that more than 23 of Holyoke's sons have played major league baseball, "which tells you what kind of interest there will be."
